99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't believe we have been going at this thing for 99 days already. Well, we've certainly improved a lot... sorry, don't mean to reminisce, folks. That's for tomorrow... I don't think we'll throw any parties till heri cleans up all his missed posts though.
My usual pen and ink drawing with a bit of moldy ink wash (no, that's not a technique. I had some old ink in a can, so I opened it up to use today and it was covered in mold! needless to say, I still used it).

90 = Gunfight
We're on the last 10 girls, but we still have some tricks up our sleeves... like posting late... again.Today's topic was a challenge, we had to do a gunfight scene with 10 girls while utilizing perspective. I spent most of the latter portion of the day on this one. stitching it together was a pain, I still don't have it quite right... I'm sure our sharp-eyed readers will be able to point it out quickly.
On the bright side, I used some paper a bought a while ago, 500 Strathmore hot pressed Bristol, it was like drawing on a sheet of heaven, the ultimate pen and ink paper if you ask me. Smooth as a baby's bottom, and boy do I know my way around baby's bottoms... uh, wait...

Iyt iz hard ta buleve we is so close to bein dun
Today I decided we would draw the Roman goddess Venus as our ideal of beauty (as most artists in the past have done). I had a difficult time concentrating on this one. I added the flowers and castle because the picture looked empty... dang, I'm lazy.

well waddya know? I do a nice sketch, rush off to school, come back from school to finish my drawing and scan it up. But, I remember that my uncle is staying in the garage (were the scanner is) and he goes to bed at 9. So, here is my drawing today...
I'm making up the topics this week so you can expect more weirdness. This one was to draw a landscape that suggested, but did not explicitly depict the female form. My first idea was better but, not having a scanner, I was forced to use the tools available. drawing with a mouse is like drawing with a dirt clod.

76 = Cat lady

This one was a challenge. I bought some nice pen nibs that are super flexible and make beautiful lines but they are difficult to not make wobbly lines with, and hatching in pen and ink just baffles me... I need to just sit down and do a million value scales for practice. Multiple figures with composition and perspective and stuff... I'll do more like this. No pain, no gain.

I found a great quote just now:
"Trying to determine what is going on in the world by reading newspapers is like trying to tell the time by watching the second hand of a clock." - Ben Hecht
So true... How did I find this quote? Well Ben Hecht wrote an autobiography which breifly mentioned the Polish egotist, Imean artist ,who I recently rediscovered, Stanislav Szukalski, which in turn was mentioned in a short personal biography about the artist by Jim Woodring (check the website). I discovered Szukalski a while ago but my memory was recently refreshed by none other than Marshall Vandruff at that increidible artistic anatomy crash course (if it is ever in your area, make sure you take it! Artist or no). Anyway, Szukalski hung out with Ben Hecht when he moved to the States in his teens.
What does this have to do with Lucille Ball as the pope? I have no idea.

We had to draw a frame from this music video. I did a sketch of her that was really super nice but the finished drawing didn't capture her as well.

These where the screen caps that I chose for myself. The second image demonstrates why photography should never have been invented, stuff like that shouldn't be frozen forever. But while we have it, we might as well have a good laugh.
I am kind of dissappointed that I didn't get the subtle creepy factor of the image I chose to draw, it looks like it is straight out of a Chris Cunningham music video!
Also, the composition of the first image is really good, I was surprised when I saw it. The organization of darks and lights is clear and the large shapes are interesting and read well... this keeps your interest, but at the same time there is no mistake what the main subject of the image is. Those black and white stripes on the walls are the oldest trick in the book.
